Scale & polish, also known as a hygiene check up, is the process of removing tough stains or tartar build up that cannot be removed by regular brushing. Tartar builds up on your teeth if bacteria is present, this can have greater complications in the future.
Our Dental Therapists are highly trained in scale & polish techniques which is guaranteed to improve your overall oral health. Treatment isn’t painful and can be performed within 20 minutes depending on the case.
Hygiene check ups are recommended as part of a healthy oral routine. We recommend you book in to see our hygienist every 3 to 4 months to ensure your teeth stay clean and healthy, reducing the chase of you needing expensive treatment in the future.
If you currently have stained teeth or tartar build up this could lead to future complications such as gum disease of tooth decay. Catching these symptoms early can lower your chance of needing future expensive dental procedures.
We recommend a scale and polish 4 times a year to reduce the risk of gum disease. Having your teeth professionally cleaned will remove tough stains and plaque build up, that cannot be removed from standard brushing and flossing. The key benefits after treatment are:
Assessment - Your dentist will carry out a full dental examination which could include x-rays to assess the overall health of your mouth. Once you pass the dental examination your dentist will then explain the cleaning process.
Scrape - The next step is the scrape stage. Your dentist will use an ultrasound scraper to get rid of any plaque and tartar build up, followed by specialised instruments to remove more stubborn stains.
Polish - The final step is the polish. This is where your dentist will polish the surface of your teeth to remove any remaining stains. This is painless and usually takes 20 minutes.
